Travel and adventure have a big part to play in Peru, according to PromPeru, the commission on the promotion of the country for export and tourism.
Daniela Resenterra, spokesperson for the body, explained that there is a lot for visitors to see other than the iconic Machu Picchu, such as the Colca Canyons.
Off the beaten track, he said that the gorges are twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and are a "relatively unknown" part of the country.
In addition, Mr Resenterra stated that Peru is a great destination for adventure travel.
"The northern coastal area of Peru has got the best weather in the country, it's sunshine constantly all year round. It's really good for surfing and water sports," he said.
Iquitos in the Amazon could be perfect for imaginative travellers, as it gives visitors the chance to sleep 30-metres up in the jungle.
Lonely Planet suggests those exploring Peru should head to Lake Titicaca, Lima, Arequipa and Mancora.
