Travellers looking for an ideal destination for a trip could consider New Zealand after it won a number of titles at the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards held at the World Travel Market on Wednesday (November 11th).
Whale Watch Kaikoura, which gives visitors the chance to come face to face with some of the largest marine animals in the world, was named as overall winner at the ceremony.
Founded by four Maori families, the initiative was commended for endeavouring to build up the enterprise, contributing to the local economy and helping them buy back their ancestral land.
Chief operating officer Kauahi Ngapora commented: "Getting this award now is recognition of our accumulated efforts. But it's also recognition for our young and energetic staff and guests who are the inspiration and the answer to our continued improvements."
Youth hostel YHA Wellington City was given the accolade for best large hotel/accommodation, while other winners at the awards were the Rivertime Resort and Ecolodge in Laos and Guludo Beach Lodge in Mozambique.
