Keen travellers over the age of 60 are increasingly trying to get away from Britain despite the impact of the recession, according to the World Travel Market. Figures taken from a poll, which was commissioned in conjunction with the event, showed that 84 per cent of those that said that they will not let the current economic climate get in the way of trips that they plan to take in 2010, 84 per cent were over the age of 60.
Travellers affected by the economic downturn but still wanting to get away have been heading to destinations outside the eurozone to get the best value for money, according to Travelex. A declining strength of the pound has caused an increase in popularity of Hong Kong, Thailand and South Africa as places to visit in the autumn and where visitors can exploit a favourable exchange rate and good weather. In addition, the Egyptian pound and Turkish lira have seen a growth in demand due to the countries' proximity to the UK combined with the currencies' value for money.
Slovenia has emerged as a favourite destination for travellers wanting to save money and take advantage of adventure activities, according to Holiday Options. The website has recommended that imaginative explorers should make the most of the value for money on offer in the eastern European country where holidaymakers can eat and drink well for a fraction of the equivalent price in Britain. Food is comparatively cheap, with the price of an average three-course meal costing £13, while a glass of wine there costs around £1.40 and the average punter pays £1.60 for a large beer.
