Holidaymakers should not let their guard down while on their holidays to the extent that they are vulnerable to being ripped off by scams.
This is the warning of insurance provider LV=, which said that 21 per cent of Britons have fallen victim to a con while in European resorts over the past five years.
On average, the cost of a scam, including dodgy timeshares and poor tours, amounted to £250 per traveller.
Emma Holyer, spokesperson for LV=, said: "Not only can cons cost money but they can ruin a trip, so we are offering advice on steps to take to avoid ending up out of pocket or on a tour that you don''t want to be."
Tips include not participating in scratchcard promotions, as well as only booking trips through reputable companies, preferably before reaching the destination.
The Office of Fair Trading believes around 400,000 British holidaymakers are hit by travel scams in various guises every year.
