"People are looking for more value, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are cutting their travel budget," Sarah Smalley, managing director of market researcher GfK Ascent, told the publication.
Whether it is helping countries such as Indonesia recover from natural disasters or getting involved in environmental projects in India, there appears to be a thirst for really getting to know a nation rather than just sitting on its beaches.
Amitabh Kant, an Indian civil servant who has helped his country's tourism sector, said that people are looking to explore the world and understand the environment they are living in.
Indeed, various volunteer groups have been offering their services to Indonesia since last month's earthquake devastated parts of the Asian nation.
