People taking work breaks to go on an imaginative travel trip should consider volunteering when abroad, according to the author of Work Your Way Around the World.
Susan Griffith told the Press and Journal that this will give travellers the chance to "do something different" from their everyday jobs.
"Obviously, the main benefit of volunteering is that you get to travel without having had to save a fortune before you leave," Ms Griffith says, alluding to the fact there are schemes that provide accommodation and other help to travellers who volunteer.
She referenced Africa and Latin America as destinations where getting involved in local projects for no salary is a popular pursuit.
Latin American countries that may provide the setting for adventure holidays, as well as volunteering schemes, include Argentina and Brazil.
Imaginative travellers may want to visit the Iguazu National Park and Iguazu Falls area in Argentina or go hiking or mountain biking through the Brazilian rainforest.
