Volunteering holidays ''are great fun''

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Many people have the wrong idea when it comes to what volunteering holidays may involve, one expert has said.

Bruch Haxton, operations director at the placement organisation i-to-I, pointed out that such trips are not just for would-be hippies, but that they can offer people the chance to really give something back to the communities they visit.

"There is a huge amount of fun and people don''t always don''t understand that. It is about having fun and doing something worthwhile at the same time," he commented.

Mr Haxton added that people could join in trips to orphanages to look after underprivileged children in Mombasa, or take care of elephants on wildlife conservation trips.

According to recent research from i-to-I, 31 per cent of respondents to a survey said they feel guilty about not being eco-friendly enough, while 25 per cent said they feel bad about not offering more money to charities.
