A typical day on an African safari holiday

A Typical Day

Most days start with a dawn game drive (wrap up warm as it can be surprisingly chilly!) before returning for a hearty breakfast prepared by your cook, breaking down the tents then driving off to the next destination. Lunch may be en route, again prepared by your cook, then possibly time for souvenir hunting at local markets before arriving at the new campsite late afternoon, putting up tents and enjoying another prepared camp meal.

An Imaginative Traveller safari is an adventure holiday – the infrastructure of the country may differ significantly from what you are accustomed to. Please be open-minded. Roads are often in very poor condition, which makes it hard on vehicles and breakdowns do occasionally occur. Laundry services are not available whilst camping, but sometimes when we stay at a site for at least two consecutive nights, there may be the opportunity to do some hand-washing. Although some of the campsites we use offer good facilities and swimming pools, others are very basic with pit toilets. The availability of water is not always assured for showers although we will always be able to obtain enough for cooking and washing food items. However the opportunity to camp in the middle of such places as the Serengeti and on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater are incredible experiences that you are unlikely to forget especially as there are no fences and thus wildlife is free to roam at leisure past your tent!

Overlanding

Overland safari expeditions offer the perfect way to travel from A to B experiencing vast distances, numerous countries and locations as well as safaris and other activities. Travel through Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda on our East African safaris, visit all the great game parks of southern Africa travelling from Victoria Falls to Cape Town or go the whole way from South to East Africa on our longest overland expeditions.

Activities on a safari holiday

The list is endless – as well as the usual 4WD safaris, you can also take night game drives and walking safari expeditions. Enjoy a boat safari on the Chobe River or being poled along in a mokoro (dug-out canoe) in Botswana. Optional activities include taking a scenic sunset flight over the Okavango Delta or for the ultimate safari experience, a hot-air balloon ride over the Serengeti! Mountain Gorilla safaris

Quite simply trekking to visit mountain gorillas is one of those ‘must do’ things in Africa, if not the world. Coming face to face with endangered gorillas in their own environment is a real privilege and gorilla trekking is an experience that will be indelibly etched in anyone’s minds. Imaginative Traveller offer mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans as part of an East African safari holiday. ALL our gorilla permits are pre-purchased and thus guaranteed. Please see Mountain Gorilla safari holidays.
