This epic and challenging trip takes you right the way through some truly off the beaten track destinations in the marvellous countries of Ghana, Togo and Benin. Starting in Ghana's chaotic capital of Accra, we start our adventurous journey with a drive through eastern Ghana past the famous Akosombo Dam to the cool hills of Mont Klouto in Togo, famous for it's beautiful forests and incredible butterflies! After seeing a traditional drumming and dancing performance in the village we will head off on an epic journey to the far north of Benin, a remote area famous for its fantastic Pendjari National Park and the traditional Tata Somba tribal villages featuring double-storey mud huts. Making our way south through Benin, we visit the fascinating ancient Dahomey capital of Abomey and the remarkable stilt-village of Ganvié before hitting the coast at the stunning town of Ouidah. Here we learn about the awful history of the slave trade, and learn all about the area's voodoo culture with visits to the voodoo centres of Grand Popo and Togoville. After crossing back into Ghana for the final time, we visit the old town of Keta and explore its crumbling Fort Prinzenstein before returning to the bustling city of Accra. Unlike their more visited cousins in East Africa, these countries truly are hidden gems that are largely untouched by tourism - every trip through the region is therefore an incredible adventure involving fantastic community interaction, some wonderful wild camps, some difficult roads, and a rare opportunity to experience a more traditional way of life. West Africa boasts a huge arts and craft scene, colourful and vibrant markets, and incredible traditional music - however, what makes West Africa especially wonderful are the people - the fascinating cultures, incredible atmosphere, and warm friendly smiles that greet you every day are what makes a trip here so very special, and why the area is frequently on the top of the favourites list for many of our most seasoned travellers.
