Get to grips with Morocco’s great cities on this adventure into the magical medinas of Marrakech, Fes and Meknes. From the European feel of Casablanca, epicentre of Morocco’s new dynamism, travelling to the country’s trio of imperial cities offers a swift, fantastic fix of culture shock. Marrakech, Fes and Meknes are home to some of the world’s most striking streetscapes, where feverish commerce and religion, ancient traditions and North African hospitality all converge in an atmosphere unlike any you’ll find anywhere else. One of the joys of exploration is discovering the differences between the cities: the great spectacle of Djemaa el Fna in Marrakech, where the whole city seemingly heads come sunset; letting curiosity be your map in Fes’s labyrinthine, beautiful medina, its 10,000 streets surrounded by ancient gates and fortifications; discovering the artisans and carpet-bagging rituals among the souks of comparatively mellow Meknes. Each enchants, and travelling in Morocco surprises too, with the rolling hills and coniferous forest of the Middle Atlas and the snow-flecked High Atlas providing memorable backdrops.
