A little bit about Tom
I grew up in Suffolk, and went to the high school in Debenham – and, after moving up north for several years to study and work, followed by a stint living abroad, I’ve found myself back here. But as Terry Pratchett wrote, “Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving”, and I like to leave as often as I can.
I spent the winter of 2014/15 working as a tour guide with sled dogs in the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, followed by a couple of months living in the south of France (which was much warmer). I’ve travelled in several European countries, but now I’ve got my sights set farther afield.
- What is your favourite destination?
Scandinavia – I love the people, the culture, and the nature. If ever I am banished from the UK, this is where I’ll go. I might not necessarily wait for banishment.
- What has been the most surprising destination you've been to?
I was surprised when I went hiking in the Roaches in the Peak District recently - some really beautiful and rugged nature almost on the doorstep! Lud’s Church was a highlight. It’s a testament to the fact you don’t have to go halfway around the world to have an adventure.
- What has been your favourite or most memorable occasion whilst travelling?
Building a fire on a frozen swamp in northern Sweden, settling in with a cup of hot lingonberry juice, and looking up at the Northern Lights with just a small team of huskies for company.
- Where is the next destination on your list?
I’d love to do a tour of the National Parks in the US, and I want to drive the Ring Road in Iceland.
