Pyramids and the Nile Valley Egypt
Although Egypt is packed full of pyramids the best known site is of course at Giza on the western outskirts of Cairo. Home to the Great Pyramids of Cheops and the timeless and enigmatic Sphinx, these great monuments to the afterlife defy the imagination. All our adventure holidays to Egypt include a guided tour of the Pyramids and Sphinx.
Following the Nile South we reach Luxor and the huge Karnak Temple complex which was built over 1500 years! On the West Bank of the Nile lies the Valley of the Kings which contains the once hidden tombs of over 62 pharaohs, including Tutankhamun. On our adventure tours here you take an exciting donkey ride into the Valley of the Kings – a memorable experience!
Also on the West Bank lies the Colossi of Memnon, the Ramesseum and Queen Hatshepsut's Temple which is carved from an east-facing cliff and famed for its carved reliefs as well as its impressive proportions, best viewed from above.
Finally, there is Abu Simbel, 300 km to the south of Aswan. Built by Ramses II, the two temples are usually the highlight of their holiday in Egypt. Originally on the banks of the Nile, they were raised stone by stone to a new site above the lake in the late 1960s by UNESCO as the waters from the new Lake Nasser rose behind the Aswan High Dam. Many of our adventure holidays to Egypt either include a visit to Abu Simbel or allow time as an optional excursion from Aswan.
