Welcome to Tanzania! On arrival into Mwanza Airport from Nairobi, you will be transferred to the Little Okavango Camp, ideally located between the mighty Serengeti to the West, and Lake Victoria to the East. The camp is so named due to the nearby network of water channels that resemble those of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The Little Okavango is an intimate campground consisting of four raised cabins, complete with en-suite facilities. The bird viewing opportunities in this area are second to none. Take advantage of the enormous array of species on offer as you embark on a bird watching walk around the camp area, depending on your arrival time. This evening, relax by the campfire, drink in hand, before dinner under the stars.
Little Okavango Camp
Rise early this morning as you embark on a canoe ride through the tranquil waterways of Little Okavango before heading out on to the wide waters of Lake Victoria. Drift along channels dwarfed by tall papyrus grasses that are home to Africa’s most beautiful birds. Take brunch in the Island restaurant at the heart of the waterways before returning to camp and commencing the drive to the North of Serengeti NP via Mugumu, with a packed lunch to enjoy en route.
An afternoon game drive through a landscape likely filled with thousands of wildebeest finishes at the exclusive Bush Rover Mara Camp, perfectly placed on the Mara River, to witness the fabled crossings. Sit atop your Bush Rover Suite watching the wildlife spectacle with a sundowner before dinner.
Bush Rover Mara Camp
Over the next four days, you will be based at the beautiful Bush Rover Suites, in arguably the best position the Serengeti has to offer to witness one of the natural world’s most spectacular events – the wildebeest crossing the Mara River.
The Bush Rover Suite is a full working Land Rover that, once in situ, folds out as graceful as a swallowtail into a stunning home. From the beautiful elevated bedroom with its balcony looking out to the wilderness, to the wood panelled bathroom, no screw has been left unturned to smooth your outdoor living. You will have the modern comforts of solar powered hot water, lights and power sockets to recharge your batteries. What more could you want?
Each Bush Rover suite looks directly onto the river at a frequently used crossing point. The experience of sitting high on a Bush Rover balcony sofa, with thousands of animals pouring into the water in front, is a truly life-enhancing experience. Jumping into an open game drive car and heading the few hundred metres down to the river’s edge, allows us to be right in the middle of this breath-taking spectacle. The photo opportunities are incredible.
The crossings are rightly at the top of many people’s list of great wildlife experiences, and as a result, most crossings witnessed by visitors to both Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya, are done so in the company of many other visitors and vehicles. At the Bush Rover Suites, the crossings are an exclusive experience, almost never shared!
Unlike fixed camps and lodges, the Bush Rovers move to the right places to provide the safari of a lifetime, to experience splendid isolation in total comfort. After you leave, the Bush Rover Suite simply folds back into a moving vehicle and moves on to the next exciting port of call, leaving no trace of human footprint. In the evenings during your stay, why not jump in the tub for a soak before drinks and dinner by the camp fire.
Bush Rover Mara Camp
After breakfast, you will return to the Little Okavango Camp. You are due to arrive that afternoon, when you will embark on a bird walk through the Grumeti Woodlands. Keep your eyes fixed on the treetops as you search for fish eagles, kingfishers, turacos and other brightly coloured birds.

Early this morning you will be transferred back to Mwanza to connect with your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport. On arrival in Kilimanjaro, there will be a long drive north to the town of Longido, located in the Arusha region of Tanzania. The drive should take approximately seven hours and you will be provided with a packed lunch en route. The town sits at the foot of Mount Longido, some 80kms north of Arusha on the way to Nairobi. Eventually, you will arrive at a village called Gelai-Bomba. Before dark you will make your way to your camp for dinner and an overnight rest.
After an early breakfast at 7:30am you will be introduced to your Masai guide who will guide your walk from Gelai-Bomba village to the source of Lake Natron. This trek should take roughly seven hours. On arrival at your campsite, enjoy some dinner and get some well-deserved rest.
The Source of Lake Natron Campsite
Today you will walk from the village to Lake Natron. The walk will take roughly three hours and you are due to arrive at the lake at noon in time for a packed lunch. After lunch, spend some time exploring the shoreline photographing the many thousands of flamingos and other birds that frequent this soda lake. You will also visit the Lake Natron waterfalls.
Later that afternoon, return to camp for a good rest. At midnight tonight, rise to commence your trek up the imposing volcano of ‘Ol Donyo Lengai’, translating as ‘The Mountain of God’. Trekking at this time avoids the extreme heat of the midday sun so be sure to take plenty of water with you and a good hat for the following morning. The terrain underfoot consists of rough scree, lava and volcanic ash with steep gullies and furrows to navigate. Once you reach the summit, you can explore the two craters with caution since one of them is still active! Enjoy the breathtaking views across Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley.
After an early breakfast this morning, descend to the foothills of Ol Donyo Lengai where your safari vehicle awaits you. From here you will transfer to the airport to connect with your flight to Zanzibar.
After touchdown in Zanzibar, you will be transferred to the Nungwi area on the North Eastern tip of the island where you will find The Zanzibari Boutique Hotel. Surrounded by a wildlife park and facing the Indian Ocean, The Zanzibari is an idyllic location to unwind. With a limited number of rooms on site, the hotel provides the perfect intimate setting for your time on the ‘Spice Island’.
The Zanzibari Boutique Hotel
The next few days are entirely at your leisure for you to discover the ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar at your own pace. If you do manage to tear yourself away from the pool, there is a wealth of activities on offer, including diving, snorkelling and sunset cruises in a traditional Dhow boat. Failing that, head into town and explore Stone Town, the oldest sector of the island. Stroll through narrow alleyways, colourful bazaars and marvel at the eclectic mixture of architecture shaped through generations of spice traders on the island. Tropical islands steeped in Swahili history and some of the best coral beaches in Africa are at your disposal.
