Nothing beats the thrill of seeing animals in their natural habitats. Whether canoeing past a jaguar on a Brazilian riverbank, witnessing a mother brown bear emerge from hibernation with her cubs, or joining the largest gathering of elephants in Southern Asia, a natural wildlife encounter is one you’re not likely to forget.
Here’s our guide to some of the best wildlife holidays available with Imaginative Traveller in 2019 & beyond.
Watch for brown bears in Oulanka National Park, Finland
There are few animals that capture the imagination quite as much as the mighty and awe-inspiring brown bear. They are the most widely distributed bear in the world, with some 200,000 of them in the forests and mountains of northern North America, Europe and Central Asia. Typically solitary creatures, even alone they are incredibly dangerous, and so best observed under expert guidance.
On the Wild Finland tour, you’ll spend an evening in a comfortable bear hide in Oulanka National Park watching for brown bears, with a professional guide. There are thought to be around 1,500 brown bears in the vast forests of Finland, and they are very active in this area. The hide is warm and comfortable, with large windows for excellent views and plenty of openings for camera lenses, so if you’re a keen photographer you’ll have plenty of opportunity to capture shots of the brown bear or of the other wildlife in this area.
